August 24, 2007
Found this on Karl Staib’s blog, love it!
When your aching heart
cries out
for affection
then give
affection to
your friends,
family,
and strangers.
Not because
they will give it back to you,
but
because
it will fill
that lonely place
in your heart
with the love
that you needed all along.

August 24, 2007

“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being”
I’m a firm believer in this but there is one caveat that most don’t understand when they manage & teach people, treating people as if they were what they ought to be is completely up to the other person and should never been viewed through the lens of the manager/teacher’s ego. Often we get caught up in how people should perform and spend less time looking and feeling what a person’s actual potential is. Not everyone is to be treated the same for we all have different capabilities and paths. The key to feel what a person should be and treat them that way. The recipient may not reach this point for a long time or not at all in this lifetime but as long as it’s a true capacity of that person and not what you want them to be, eventually they will rise to this level.
I’ve seen it again and again, as long as I check my ego, seeing the potential in a person and treating them this way will provide a door for them to walk through.
Not familiar with Goethe?
Share ThisFrom Wikipedia:
Goethe’s works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, humanism, science and painting. Goethe’s magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part dramatic poem Faust.[1] Goethe’s other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and the semi-autobiographical novel Elective Affinities.
Goethe was one of the key figures of German literature and the movement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; this movement coincides with Enlightenment, Sensibility (”Empfindsamkeit”), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author of Faust and Theory of Colours, he influenced Darwin[2] with his focus on plant morphology.[3] Goethe’s influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a primary source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry and philosophy.

August 23, 2007
A reader posed a great question on a previous post about dreams: What Do Your Dreams Mean?
Leo, if you have kept a dream journal you might have more insight that I can provide. As with all dreams, they are personal and often do not resemble generalities that books can offer. Yet there is often a thread in dreams that books offer a good starting point. The key is, what does “black” mean to you? How do you feel about the color black? Does it mean “nothing” as in emptiness or does it mean death and fear. Maybe to you it means possibility? You also want to ask yourself; “what else was in that dream?” The other factors are very important to understanding what the symbols mean to you.
For me, the color black in a dream, would make me feel fearful or void of other color and light. Depending on what else was in the dream, maybe I am having a moment of feeling loss over something. For some the color might be transition, movement from white which has all the color to black which is void of color. A mental cleaning of the slate maybe?
If you grew up in a culture where black had a a huge significance, you could bet that you will also tag this meaning onto the color in your dreams. For example, if you grew up in South America, where black was worn for days after a death; you would have a strong affinity to this meaning in your dreams.
To help, here are some possible meanings:
Negativity, fear, anxiety, hatred, resentment, guilt, depression (no hope / faith), movement into darkness or supressing something, transformation, clean slate, new potential.
Again, these meanings might not be close at all, it depends on your cultural and experiential beliefs about black as a symbol. One more note, don’t forget that what I feel a dream means comes from what I have experienced, so I will always say at firt; “if it were my dream”.
Feel free to share the other parts of your dream, I’m sure there are tons of readers here how would love to help you with the meaning of black.
If anyone would like to post what else they know of the color black, please do so.
Namaste,
Kris

Travel and history, two of my favorite subjects. Not that I can remember all that I learn but I still love seeing relationships and how things came about, often by small actions leading to huge events.

What would happen if every blog published posts discussing the same issue, on the same day?
One issue. One day. Thousands of voices.
On October 15th, 2007 we will be part of a voice of many participating in Blog Action Day, a day where bloggers show their force for social change and do nothing but blog in their own way about the environment. As well, each blogger committed will donate that day’s advertising sales to the charity of their choice. It’s a win-win for everyone.

August 20, 2007
“Treat others as you in turn want to be treated” and “Pledge your mind to clear thinking” were the two phrases or maxims I was told repeatedly growing up. The second was more of an annoyance since my Father would spew it when I wasn’t being smart but the first was just how I was taught to grow up. The second actually started to make sense now that I’ve been in the study of Buddhism.
But this post is about the Golden Rule and another great post I came across by Zen Habits: “18 Practical Tips for Living the Golden Rule“.
One could argue that being an ass in traffic is how they also want to be treated but deep down it’s most likely not true. Zen Habits writes a great post on how to live the Golden Rule and reap great results in happiness. Below is a condensed list of the 18 tips:
- Practice empathy
- Practice compassion
- How would you want to be treated
- Be friendly
- Be helpful
- Be courteous in traffic
- Listen to others
- Overcome prejudice
- Stop criticism
- Don’t control others
- Be a child
- Send yourself a reminder
- Tie a string to your finger
- Post it on your wall or make it your home page
- Rise above retaliation
- Be the change
- Notice how it makes you feel
- Say a prayer
To better understand this list, checkout the post.
