Who else brings the masses new ideas with such enthusiasm? Who else can take spiritual awakening and make them buzz words in global culture? Oprah is the one. Her latest media event “Oprah’s Bookclub: A New Earth”, using a book authored by Eckhart Tolle, brought over 500,000 people online (via skype technology) to take part in a 10 week class led by Eckhart and Oprah. When I first heard about it, I have to be honest, I didn’t give it much thought. I’m not one who follows Oprah, maybe it’s her mass marketing arm that turns me off, yet I’ve always been one who admired her for her promotion skills. I take back everything I said about her marketing madness at a party a few weeks ago, this woman has power and not only has power but she gets spiritual awakenings and just the same work we and readers of this blog do everyday. So, I downloaded the book to my eReader, hit her website and off I went. Right away I was struck with how Eckhart brings in concepts I’ve been studying on for over 8 years in Buddhism, to see this being presented to a mass audience of over 500,000, well it gave me a chill. Then this morning I got an email from the listserv of my Sangha, a forward from one of the founders of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in San Francisco, resonating the same feelings and words as I felt. Even Buddha would say, the goal is to awaken, however that might happen, just awaken.I urge you all to join up, grab the book, at least you will enjoy the hour and a half lectures by Eckhart and Oprah each Monday night. And if you miss it, search for Oprah on iTunes and subscribe to the podcast, see the whole lecture whenever you wish. You can also go online to oprah.com and view the lectures via her ondemand feature.Several of us around here have jumped right in, want to join us?LaBoheme

I am so greatful to Eckhart Tolle and Oprah for turning me onto Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and her beautiful book “”My Stroke of Insight”". Her story is amazing and her gift to all of us is a book purchase away I’m happy to say.

Dr Taylor was a Harvard brain scientist when she had a stroke at age 37. What was amazing was that her left brain was shut down by the stroke - where language and thinking occur - but her right brain was fully functioning. She experienced bliss and nirvana and the way she writes about it (or talks about it in her now famous TED talk) is incredible.

What I took away from Dr. Taylor’s book above all, and why I recommend it so highly, is that you don’t have to have a stroke or take drugs to find the deep inner peace that she talks about. Her book explains how. “”I want what she’s having”", and thanks to this wonderful book, I can! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and thank you Eckhart and Oprah.

Got something to say?
